Harvey Bean Obituary

Harvey Raymond Bean passed away peacefully at his home in Canyonville, Oregon on October 31, 2025. He was 80 years old.
Harvey was born on January 30, 1945 to Raymond and Juanita Bean in Fort Bragg, California. Harvey attended Lodi Academy and continued on to Pacific Union College in Angwin, California. He held odd jobs in the summer to help with tuition and even worked at the Sequoia Park Zoo where “Bill the Chimpanzee” was a favorite. He received his B.A. in religion and pursued his postgraduate degree in history. It was during this time period that he met his future wife, Margie Bean. Margie was majoring in life science with a minor in education. A mutual love of nature led to their first date of bird watching. A year later Harvey proposed to Margie while taking a walk on a nature trail near campus. Three months later they married in the church that Margie’s father (Ben Matthews) had built, in Exeter, California on July 29, 1968. They spent their honeymoon in Sequoia National Park and then headed out on a roadtrip to Ketchikan, Alaska to begin their new careers. They had accepted teaching jobs at the Seventh-day Adventist School where Harvey taught grades 5-8, and Margie taught grades 1-4. Three years later in 1971 they adopted their first daughter, Kimberli, and excitedly flew down to Seattle to welcome her to the family. They planned on adopting another child a year later, and much to their surprise they were told that this was not necessary as another was already on the way. Their second child, Kirby, was born in Ketchikan in 1972.
Harvey lost his mother in a tragic car accident in 1973 and decided that they wanted to be closer to Harvey’s father to provide support. They put in a request to the church to move to a location where elder support was available. They were given three choices, one of which was Canyonville. The decision to move to Canyonville was made as it could provide for Harvey’s father’s needs at the Forest Glen Senior Residence. Harvey took a job working as a teacher at the Seventh-day Adventist school in Canyonville. It was in the Canyonville hospital that their daughters Keri and Kristi were born. In the 1980’s Harvey transitioned to working at the Forest Glen Senior Residence (the same one that had prompted their move). He eventually became the Activities Director and was able to utilize his creative talents. He organized countless activities and events for those who lived there. He was also known to break out his trumpet on occasion or invite the family in to sing songs accompanied by Margie on piano.
Harvey’s love of the outdoors led him to his final career of landscaping and yardwork. He loved working with his hands to build and maintain outdoor spaces. On his property in Canyonville he hand-dug numerous walking trails. These twisty trails included ponds, benches, moss, ferns, and Umpqua river stones. He even built a “sky walk” which was a suspended board walk above the forest floor. Harvey was known as a kind and compassionate man who always placed the needs of others first. He had a great sense of humor and was quick to smile and laugh. He loved black licorice, root beer floats, and old western movies. His kids joked that he provided counseling services to all of his yard care clients as he was always ready to lend an ear to hear about peoples’ lives, loves, joys, and sorrows. He had a quiet, yet deep faith in God and the gospel. Harvey is survived by his wife Marjorie of 57 years, and four children Kimberli, Kirby, Keri, and Kristi. Also surviving are three grandchildren: Destiny, Laree’, and Kaiden.
Harvey was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Lois and his brother Vern.
